Mitigating Death

We mitigate death in FaerieMUD in a number of ways. All of them revolve around choice:

  • First, we allow a player whose body (or mind or soul) is dead to try to revive it (usually using those parts which remain alive). In FaerieMUD terms, this means the spirit stays with the surviving components.
  • Second, we offer a character a chance at a saving grace (this is still tentative) in the form of an intervention by a god.
  • Third, the spirit remains. And, if the spirit has advanced (usually the case if the character has advanced far), the next character inhabited by that spirit will have more options and more potential than her predecessor. This leaves open the question of what happens to the surviving components. Is there a chance they perform some kind of haunt?
  • Fourth, it is possible to have children in FaerieMUD and to play your character's own child after the character herself has died.
  • Fifth, the player can choose to haunt the character who killed her character. This might also mitigate griefing. In FaerieMUD terms, this means the surviving components stay near the person who killed the character. If the killer has no ability to kill those remaining components, they may serve as a warning, telling others who come near the story of their death.

Of course, all of this raises the question: Is mitigated death real death??
