Matter

It was never supposed [the poet Imlac said] that cogitation is inherent in matter, or that every particle is a thinking being. Yet if any part of matter be devoid of thought, what part can we suppose to think? Matter can differ only in form, bulk, density, motion and direction of motion: to which of these, howeveer varied or combined, can consciousness be annexed? To be round or square, to be solid or fluid, to be great or little, to be moved slowly or swiftly one way or another, are modes of material existence, all equally alien from the nature of cogitation. If matter be once without thought, it can only be made to think by some new modification, but all modifications which it can admit are equally unconnected with cogitative powers.

— Samuel Johnson

Matter is that which remains the same through change. Examples are woods and wands, elements and gems.

Creating Matter

To create a dream document for a new class of matter, create a link to it by adding it to the list below, then copy the MatterTemplate? into the page created by the new link.

Kinds of Matter

  • Trees -- the matter used for items made out of woods, grasses and wendables.
  • Elements -- like, the periodic table of elements.
  • gems-- jewels and rocks.
  • Faerie Tarot -- the cards of the Faerie Tarot are also a form of matter (that which remains the same through change). In fact, they can even be thought of as Prime Matter (that which remains the same through all change).
  • I Ching -- The Book of Changes (not really a kind of matter, but it sorta fits here). Form equals that which does not remain the same through a particular change.
  • languages -- like tongues and pidgins and the strange things horses, cows and dragons do.
