Clothos, The Weaver

The first of the three Fates is responsible for analyzing the stream of events experienced by each character (and by each object) for skeins of events which can be spun into a story. Each skein must meet a series of criteria:

  • Each event in a story must have something in common (a transitional device) with its immediate predecessor and with its immediate successor.
  • The first event and the last event must have something in common with each other. This may be a conflict or antagonist. Or it may be a love interest or motive. Lachesis uses this common element to evaluate whether the skein will become a story for each which experience the events.

Clothos is responsible not only for weaving all possible skeins out of a given event, but also for determining which events can be woven into already-existing stories. She passes all such results (new skeins and new versions of old skeins) to Lachesis.
