Boons
Granted by Immortals
Some Immortals may be able to create boons for player characters. Because boons are conditioned on some knowledge about the FaerieMUD world, kenning is required to create a boon (although other immortal statistics may be involved as well) and the immortal must expend cognizance to create the boon.
Every boon is conditioned on some event (the death of the character being granted the boon, for instance). When the condition is met, the boon is implemented (the character is resurrected, for instance). If the immortal so desires, she can include a revelation as well (the immortal appears and tells the character, "Because you saved the life of that fawn, I grant you renewed life," for instance). While such a resurrection boon has relevance to the issue of permanent death, it would be hard for an immortal to grant many such boons. A resurrection boon would require high incarnativity as well as kenning and the expenditure of much presence as well as cognizance. Indeed, for resurrection even divinity may be required, along with the expenditure of influence.
A far more common boon might be the following:
- Granting -- Immortal sees player character playing with pixies. Decides player may have fae side to her personality. Player character then saves a pixie from an attacking orc. Immortal grants a death boon to PC.
- Condition -- On player death.
- Boon -- When PC dies, she will become eligible to play one of the fae races (fairies, pixies, elves, etc.)
- Revelation -- Immortal appears before the player's spirit and tells her, "Because you saved that pixie, I have decided to grant you the chance to come back as a fairy."
Such a boon might require only kenning and cognizance, since it uses the knowledge of when the player has dies and grants only a new kind of spirit knowledge (how to become a fae creature).
Or another might be:
- Granting -- Immortal's avatar is rescued from a rampaging Minotaur by one of the worshippers of the Immortal's cult. Decides to reward this good deed. Grants a healing boon.
- Condition -- Whenever player visits cult's Temple.
- Boon -- Healers at Temple see aura around PC which tells them they should heal the PC for free.
- Revelation -- Aura.
Such a boon might require both kenning and incarnativity (although not as much as a resurrection boon), since it uses the knowledge of where the PC is and has a physical effect on the PC's body. Thus both presence and cognizance would be expended.
